PukiWiki Skin - breeze v0.4

When you use a piece of software for a longer time you'll start noticing the little things. Things that are not overly important but start to annoy you because they would make your life a little easier. This happened to me using the breeze v0.3 skin. The ONE thing I was missing was an easy access to a page I know that exists - I knew the name but I cannot just type it in to go there. I had to search for them or type their name after the url - both ways were cumbersome.

Improved search for PukiWiki

There is no such thing as the perfect tool. You will always find something that you don't like - for PukiWiki, my wiki engine, it's the search mechanism. There are two things that bug me: First the search results are sorted alphabetically, which is fine, but differentiated by small and capital letters. Meaning that words starting with the same letter can possibly be found in two places within the same list. The second thing I don't like, is that there is only one result list. For me different result types can be differentiated: You type in a name of a page you know exists or you just look for pages containing the search term. And pages could contain the term in the name and/or in its content.

This is another boring post about php and wikis. If you don't know those buzzwords and have no desire to learn more, please ignore this entry. If you do - here we go... As I mentioned earlier, I am using PukiWiki as a means to structure and store knowledge I come across. It is my filing system for documents, source code, posts, links and a lot of other stuff. The only thing I wasn't too fond of was the look and feel of the original theme. That's why I created my own. The advantages my skin provides, at least to me, are: - clean look and feel - (only) graphical menu - print button, referrer button - search box in the sidebar - "recently visited" list in the sidebar - hit and visitor counter - valid xhtml (except for duplicate ids in the headers created by PukiWiki) - configuarable css - visual clues for external links - nicer table of contents - optimized print layout

a new breeze for PukiWiki

I have been using Pukiwiki as the engine for my private wiki for quite a while now and I must say that I am more with happy with the choice I made. It can easily be synced between my laptop and my webspace (via ftp) because it is file based. The markup language is easy and fast to type. With the page templates I have predefined pages for the different content I store. And it offers an easy mechanism to change the look and feel of it and to enhance its functionality. I released the first version of my skin called "breeze" in Feburary. Since then I more than tripled the pages and I changed minor things that came to my attention which I tried to fix. And this is the reason for this post - to share the new release.

Wenn schon kein neuer Content, muss wenigstens ein neues Layout her. Also hier (*tusch*): Layout Nummer drei. Grundlage ist Ambiru, ein schlichter Einspälter. Eingedeutscht ist es schon, die Fotoseite wird die Tage noch nachgereicht. Auch unter der Haube hat sich hier was getan. Jetzt betreibt Wordpress 2.0.2. unser Gekritzel. Das Update war wie von Wordpress gewohnt trivial. Dateien hochladen, die Datenbanken per Klick aktualisieren, fertig. Über so was kann sich der gemeine Informatiker immer noch nur wundern... Nach netten sinnvollen Plugins suche ich gerade, wer welche weiss - immer her damit. Diese sind zur Zeit im Einsatz: Akismet Get Recent Comments runPHP SRG Clean Archives Admin Drop Down Menu Und für die Flickr Anbindung werde ich wohl FAlbum nehmen. Das war dann ...

PukiWiki installieren

Da ich mit dem letzten PukiWiki-Eintrag das Pferd von hinten aufgezäumt habe, fange ich mit diesem von vorne an: der Installation. Aber vorher ein paar erklärende Worte. PukiWiki ist ein PHP-basiertes Wiki-System, das in Japan entwickelt wird. Es gibt natürlich noch einen Hauf anderer Systeme, aber PukiWiki erfüllte fast alle meine Anforderungen: Ohne Datenbank, damit ich den Wiki-Inhalt fix zwischen Laptop und Internet hin und her kopieren kann. Einfache Syntax, damit ich mich auf besser auf den Inhalt konzentrieren kann. In PHP programmiert, damit ich notfalls selber unter die Haube schauen kann. Und Das UI sollte nicht ganz so hässlich sein, oder noch besser durch Skins veränderbar. Zusätzlich ist PukiWiki mit einer Menge netter Plugins ausgestattet, die einem das Leben noch versüßen. Großer Nachteil war und ist, dass die PukiWiki Entwickler am liebsten in ihrer Muttersprache und schrift kommunizieren, was Nichtjapanern den Einstieg erschwert. Aber eine englische Dokumentation wird langsam erzeugt.
